Taper Notes :
Those who follow my stuff know a few things. I usually use a little more “advanced” gear than this, and I don’t hit many arena shows. By the time most bands make it to these big places, they’re not any good anymore IMHO. Blur would have seemed a candidate for that, considering this is a “reunion” and all especially. But the new album gave me some hope — it’s outstanding. That hope turned out to be well-founded, as Blur killed this show. It was great to hear these songs live, and they worked in the big arena (with a coterie of backup singers and strings added, but still). Best moment might be the anti-Trump verse added to the end of “Tender.” Also, Damon Albarn has become much friendlier and more sentimental in his older age. “Friday night at Madison Square Gardens,” he says at the end, “is something to remember for me for the rest of my life. Thank you.”

I used a Shure MV88 mid-side iPhone mic for this, and I have to say, the results are pretty strong. As good as Schoeps in a hat, no. But certainly an improvement on lots of other options, and it’s nice and easy to use. It’s a stealth tape, so you hear some crowd noise and the singing of the annoying dude next to me (at least you don’t have to smell him), but overall I’m pleased with this. I attempted a second mix with more “mid” to reduce the crowd noise, but on balance this is better. I hope you enjoy the recording!
